2015 NYSWYSA GIRLS U13 CHAMPIONS GBUFC 01 SELECT

On Sunday, May 31, The Greater Binghamton United FC 01 Select U13 girls captured their second National Championship Series (NCS) New York West Youth State Cup at the SUNY Cortland complex in Cortland, NY. GBUFC 01 Select allowed only one goal over the course of four games with a goal differential of 18-1.

The U13 01 Select girls came into the tournament as favorites but showed great composure and maturity from the first moment they stepped on the pitch. The group’s results (8-0 vs. Webster, 4-0 vs. Empire Buffalo and 3-1 vs. Western NY Flash) leading up to the final day do not necessarily reflect the superiority that the team showed. On Sunday, May 31 the girls faced also unbeaten Empire Rochester – a rematch against a motivated Empire team who had used their prior State Cup defeat as motivation in training leading up to the final game.

The final was a hotly contested affair in an overcast 50 degree, off again-on again cold rain. The girls quickly jumped on Empire in the 3rd minute with their aggressive play and high pressure offense. Emilia Cappellett intercepted a goal kick, passed to Annie Fahrenkrug who fed to a hard charging Emma Bough who connected to the left side of the goal. The second goal occurred 12 minutes later, again with high pressure when Fahrenkrug deflected a goal kick to Cappellett, who placed a laser into the back of the net from outside penalty box.

The pressure from Binghamton never subsided with continued challenges from 01 Selects midfield and forwards throughout the first half and into the second half. Ione Fetsko, Lauren Ashman, Abby Moliski, Baily Dakos, Sara Marinaro, Cappellett, Bough and Fahrenkrug placed a strangle hold on Empire’s passing attack that disrupted and distressed their style of play. With 10 minutes remaining, Marinaro connected on a perfect corner kick from Lexi Bartlow to slot home what proved to be the final goal.

Empire had entered the game with a 20-4 goal differential. Led by goalkeeper Hannah Fuller, the defensive effort of Bartlow, Emma Colling, Jazzy Fahrenkrug, Melina Ortiz, Sophie Rusnak and Brielle Sarkisian shut their offense down and sealed a shut-out win. Their high power offense struggled to connect beyond midfield and their two attempts at goal were quickly dispersed with.

Coach Bahij Kashou and his assistant, John “JC” Colling, have done an outstanding job with the team and obviously the girls have responded. Team captains, Emma Bough and Lexi Bartlow, led the way with exceptional play. Midfielder Bough scored four of the eighteen Cup goals and Bartlow, the teams center back, completely shut down every player that crossed her path and continued to lead by example.

This is another impressive mark on the 01 Selects’ resume that also includes several high level tournament championships, Binghamton’s only Region 1 Championship, three consecutive years ranked as the #1 team in NYW and a berth into the 2015-2016 National League. The National League is home to the nation’s top Under-14 through Under-18 Boys and Girls Premiere club soccer teams and is the highest level of competition available for youth soccer. This level of success does not go unnoticed in the soccer world as nine 01 Select players have been picked to play for the Region 1 Olympic Development Program (ODP) tournament this weekend in Princeton, NJ.

01 Select now goes on to represent New York West and defend their Region 1 Championship June 25-30 in West Virginia.
